Catan: Starfarers – New Encounters (published by Catan Studio) expands the deep-space reimagining of the classic trading and building system by introducing three interconnected scenario campaigns and new extraterrestrial civilizations. Moving away from standard point races across static star charts, this expansion introduces evolving game states, cooperative-competitive diplomacy, and specialized planetary threats. The primary gameplay objective centers on spacefaring development and diplomatic prowess: players outfit their motherships, colonize distant planetary systems, and complete scenario-specific objectives while forming alliances with newly discovered alien civilizations.

The primary mechanical hurdle stems from navigating variable mission rules while managing interstellar trade economies. The expansion introduces new alien species—the enigmatic Ur-Amoebas and the robotic Gorgons—each bringing unique mechanics. Designed for 3 to 4 players aged 14 and up, individual scenarios play out over 90 to 120 minutes. To achieve victory, players must balance resource production with specialized mothership upgrades, adjust their strategies across the three distinct campaign chapters, and leverage new alien friendship tokens to out-maneuver rival fleets.
